![]() “We no longer think in terms of decades and centuries the way in which we used to,” she says. She also thinks the rate at which things change in the modern world has hurt our ability to consider the long view. ![]() So, part of the solution could be making people feel less unsettled and more stable, which Tsai says can be done with institutions we already have, like social welfare systems. “The more uncertain the future is, the less you can be sure that saving for the future is going to be valuable to anybody,” she says. In Tsai’s 2021 book “ When People Want Punishment,” she argues that this volatility and anxiety make people seek out more stability and order. ![]() Tsai thinks the volatility of the modern world and anxiety about the future - say, the future habitability of the planet - make it harder for people to consider the needs of their descendants. “What are the moral commitments and the kinds of cultural practices or social institutions that make people care more?” “I’m interested in the things that make people care about setting the discount rate lower and therefore valuing the future more,” she says. The purpose of Tsai’s essay is not to suggest how, say, governments might set discount rates that more fairly consider future people. And humans are currently using up the planet’s resources at an unsustainable rate, which in turn is raising global temperatures and making earth less habitable for our children and our children’s children. For example, to determine the total return on an investment, governments use something called a discount rate that places more value in the present return on the investment than the future return on the investment. And MIT’s endowment “is explicitly charged” with ensuring that future students are just as well-off as current students, Tsai says.īut in other ways, societies place a lower value on the needs of their descendants. Norway’s Petroleum Fund invests parts of its oil profits for future generations. For example, Wales has a Future Generations Commissioner who monitors whether the government’s actions compromise the needs of future generations. Some groups of people do actually consider the needs of future people when making decisions. That is, they broaden our concept of a collective society to include people who haven’t been born yet and will bear the brunt of climate change in the future. Typically, that might mean splitting resources between different socioeconomic groups, or between different nations.īut in an essay in the journal Dædalus, Tsai discusses policies and institutions that consider the needs of people in the future when determining who deserves what resources. Tsai, who is also the director and founder of the MIT Governance LAB (MIT GOV/LAB) and is the current chair of the MIT faculty, is interested in distributive justice - allocating resources fairly across different groups of people. Tsai, the Ford Professor of Political Science at MIT. “There’s been an increasing recognition that over the last few decades the economy and society have become incredibly focused on the individual, to the detriment of our social fabric,” says Lily L. ![]() Social scientists worry that too often we think only of ourselves.

If the heroes are slated to succeed in preventing the End, they (and the audience) may be treated to a detailed preview of what's coming. If it's a Cosmic Horror Story, expect an Eldritch Abomination to be on its way and, should it make it to Earth before the protagonists can get the necessary power to stop it from coming, nothing can stop its rampage as such stories rarely end in a victory for humanity. It's also very common in video games, where it's occasionally unavoidable, sometimes occurring halfway through the game in other cases, poor play may result in the world coming to a bad end. May also include Cosy Catastrophe and/or Scavenger World elements - if so, let's just hope the dog lives. It may serve as a prequel to an After the End series, or the culmination of a Just Before the End story. This is a common trope in Speculative Fiction, horror and over-the-top espionage shows, as well as many anime series. Usually it's figurative - expressed as "merely" the death of humankind, the obliteration of Civilization, or its subjugation to aliens, for example - rather than the literal rendering of the planet down to gravel. It can be either supernatural or superscience, depending on the villain, but in either case the bad guy must be beaten down and his toys broken in order to save the planet, or the universe, depending on the focus of the story. This is what will happen if the heroes don't stop the Evil Plan from doing its nasty work. that is the Trope Namer for this trope, where Michael Stipe sings, "It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine." I do feel like the creator, Hussie, isn't as in the wrong as the post-canon team and I do think many other people share my opinion, it's just the newer team that are kinda bad people. but the team is in the wrong here and pretty much everybody in the fandom is against them for good reason, you really did have to be there to get the full picture. I do want to say, I am a die-hard homestucker. They also suck at communicating! But, yeah, that's the gist of the fan interaction side of it.Ībout your little homestucky problems thoooough )! She also does not want her friends to see this more vulnerable side of her, as when Glamrock Freddy enters her room while she is crying, she angrily tells him to get out of her room. Roxy talks to herself a lot, and cares a lot about her appearance, sobbing and wailing after Gregory partially destroys her face. Later, she is shown to have low self-esteem issues, as at one point she can be seen calling herself a failure while looking in the mirror. She taunts and insults her enemies, notably insulting Gregory by saying he has no friends and that no one will miss him. Roxanne Wolf is self-centered, shown by her repeatedly complimenting herself in the mirror, and furiously asking Gregory if he thinks himself better than her. Strangely, her exposed metal face has been replaced by a newer, fish-like skull rather than the default one shared by all the Glamrock Endos. Both her ears are gone, showing the endoskeleton beneath. Her torso has been broken completely open and her hair tangled. Roxy has been damaged even further following the blaze. Roxanne's shattered design somewhat resembles Withered Bonnie's design, albeit only missing her eyes. Her voicebox is slightly damaged when she speaks, and her casing is shattered, partially exposing her endoskeleton. Her face is mostly destroyed, and her hair is a tangled mess, with makeup protruding from all around. She can only rely on voice cues to catch Gregory. Her eyes are taken by Gregory to upgrade Glamrock Freddy, blinding her, but also making it so she can no longer be stunned with a Fazerblaster or Faz-cam. She also has light grey markings on the inside of her ears, paw pads, around her muzzle, and on her belly. Just like Glamrock Chica, there is a panel-like seam under her chest, as well as on both of her outer upper arms, but additionally has panels in the same relative position on her upper thighs. Her hair is long and silver, with a bright green streak. She wears purple lipstick and toenail paint, green fingernail paint, and face paint with a series of black markings. Her eyes are bright yellow, while her fur is gray. Roxanne is an animatronic wolf with a punk rock aesthetic. |
